Using a Wireless Router Only As An Access Point

I live in a rented house along with a few other boarders. Our
landlord has a DSL connection that he allows the renters to use.
Right now the equipment consists of a DSL "modem" and a four-port
router. The router allows wired access only. I need to access the
router but am too far away in the house to run a cable, so I am
looking for a wireless solution. The landlord will not allow me to
change out his modem or existing router. Can I purchase a stand-alone
wireless router/access point (I am currently looking at the Netgear
MR814) and plug it into one of the available ports on the existing
router? I don't really need the routing or firewall capabilities of
the MR814, just the wireless access point. I can get the device for
about $25, so the price is right. Does anyone have an answer or a
reasonably priced alternative? Thanks.

Be careful of distance thru walls. Some home WAPs seem to have fairly
limited wireless range. b and g are better than a.

Yes, you can use the MR814 as an AP only.

You should configure the MR814 as follows:

Disable DHCP on the LAN side. IP addresses will be assigned by the
existing router.

I would also set-up a static IP address for the MR814. Your landlord would
need to "assign" you an available address. This will permit you to access
the MR814 to check status, etc.

Change the default SSID name to something unique.
Disable SSID broadcast.
Enable 128 WEP

You will connect an ethernet port from the existing landlords router to any
of the LAN ports on the MR814. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE WAN PORT.

You should be good to go!

If your going to use a VPN connection over the wireless link you might have
some problems, otherwise that's all you really need.

Let us know how you make out - you didn't say what the distance was you
intend to cover or what type of card your using on your end.

Regards

Regular cable or cross-over cable?

yes you can just plug a WAP into a router/switch and use it to access
the network.
