Using a Wireless router as a hub ??

Hi all,

I have the following

A linksys 4port Gateway/Router (BEFSR41) and a wireless router DLink
DI 614+
All the wired computers are connected to the linksys gateway and a
dataport is connected to the WAN port of the DLink wireless gateway.

I have one wireless laptop connected to the DLink wireless gateway
that I have setup to connect to the internet thru the LinkSys
gateway/router and I use this machine to VPN to the work network.

The only problem is that from the laptop (wireless connected to DLink
gateway) I cannot see any of my local machines even when I'm not
connected to work thru VPN. In fact from the laptop I can connect to
the internet (yahoo.com) but not to the local machines connected to
the Linksys gateway/router.

Am I missing anything. Is there any changes that I can make that would
change the wireless router/gateway to a switch?? (Would this solve the
problem??)

Any help would be greately appreciated!!

Thanks in advance

Alex...

I forgot something. You say you are using the WAN port on the WAP? I
thought that port is only used for the internet connection itself
(like a adsl modem). Try using one of its regular ports. This
probably will break your VPN.

Hi Mr_Scary (Cool handle!!)

Thanks for the fast reply,

I cannot ping any of the wired machines from the laptop it does not
work the other way around either. I did setup the DNS ip address on
the WAP to point to my adsl providers dns machines and now I can ping
and connect to the internet (Yahoo et. al.)
I can also connect to work thru VPN from the laptop as well as from
the wired machines. I think you are right in saying that there is some
firewall mechanism on one or both the router/gateway devices that
inhibit the connection.
The obvious Q at this point would be how do I turn off the firewall
mechanism on the WAP. Is this something that is even possible?? or do
I have to buy a plain wireless access point device to achieve this
type of topography??

Again, thanks for the fast reply

Like I alluded to in my second post and what Sylvain mentioned, try
connecting the WAP to the linksys without using the WAN port (use one
of its regular ports).

To view firewall config simply access its html interface by browsing
to (probably) 192.168.0.1. The linksys should also have an IP. Make
sure you know what they are (i.e. so you know what device you are
looking at; the linksys also has a web interface).

I would disable any DHCP server which both these devices usually have
on by default and configure your clients manually.

Sylvan & Mr_Scary

You guys are brilliant, I just swapped the connection from the WAN
port to one of the LAN ports and, boom, the laptop started to connect
to LAN and the internet without a problem.
This is absolutely amazing. I've been bouncing (boink, boink, ...) my
head off the wall for the past two weeks trying to figure this one
out.
One thing though, I had to change the ip settings on the laptop from
dhcp to fixed internal ip to get the VPN to work, I believe that this
is a linksys idiosyncracy, but this was negligible.

Once again thank you very much.
