Using Windows server in a workgroup to share calendars/contacts

I work in a relatively small office (<20 people). We currently have a
workgroup configuration with one computer acting as a central file server for
important files. Every computer is running XP, some home, most professional.
We would like to share an office calendar and contact list in Outlook. Can
I install Windows Server 2003 on the file server computer and have it work?

Thanks,
Ron

Greetings Ronald,

There are two methods you can do to reach the goals you are looking for:

You can install Outlook on your file server and always keep it running. From
there you can share out it's calendar and contact list to everyone and have
all your users open up the "shared" calendar and contacts in their accounts.
This setup can work but can also cause a lot of headaches.

The other more practical setup is done though MS Exchange using Public
Folders. It's the "right" way of wanting to share calendars, contacts, mail
folders, etc thoughout your company. Although Exchange can be rather pricey,
it offers a world of beneifts over traditional SMTP/POP mail based Outlook
applications. And if forking out all the extra cash at once seems
unreasonable for your small size, there are hosted Exchange solutions
available as well.

If you'd like more info about Exchange (hosted and non-hosted) feel free to
e-mail me, be glad to enlighten you and answer any questions.

Hope this helps,
