? using wi-fi to transfer files between PCs

It has been suggested to me that setting up a network between 2 PCs will
enable the relatively fast transfer of files between the PCs. In my case, I
need to transfer a significant number of original music files from a desktop
to a notebook. Will probably fill 2 or 3 CD-Rs and I would use the discs for
the transfer except the desktop uses Win98 and the notebook uses XP (won't
recognize the files from the desktop).

The notebook already has wireless but the desktop does not. What would I
have to purchase to effect this file transfer, a simple card for the desktop
and a router? What is the best way to effect the transfer then, via a null
ethernet cable joining the two PCs?

Any help appreciated since the person with the notebook (and need to acquire
the compositions) will be leaving soon.

Paul,

I use a USB file-transfer cable. BAFO is the brand, but there are
several other makers of the same device. My BAFO has its own
software, PC-LINQ, but no file-sharing protocol changes are necessary.
I also use VNC if the machines are on the same network, as that seems
to work faster and more smoother than dragging and dropping in
Explorer.

A USB file transfer cable works real well. I use a BAFO brand and no
file-sharing protocol changes are necessary.

I also use an app called VNC (freeware) if machines are on the same network
or if a port is open for VNC to work across internet (5900).

Another option is to buy a Compact Flash card and usb adapter. I got mine
from 7dayshop.com pretty cheap, but they are common everywhere. You'd need
to install a driver (supplied with adapter) on the W98 machine, but XP will
just recognise it. 7dayshop.com are cheap, but quite slow to deliver, by
the way.

Perhaps things just got a bit easier...as it turns out, the owner of the
desktop informed me he already has wireless capability in his PC. He has an
add-on card with a 2.4 GHz 802.11b USB adapter w/cable available for use.
The notebook with XP already has wifi built in. So, given what equipment I
already have to work with...

What do I need to do so that I can download the files from the desktop to
the notebook? How does the adapter that came with the desktop fit in to the
equation?
Do I need to buy more equipment to effect this transfer?

Cheapest way may be to buy a CD-R/W add in drive and hook it up to the
desktop - AFAIK IDE drives are the cheapest at the moment.

Then burn the files directly rather than transfer.

Hi Paul;
If I understand correctly both computers have wireless cards but there is no
router or access point in the swtup.
Wireless cards can be set up to work directly between themselves without a
router. The setup is called ad-hoc in wireless talk and is a true peer to
peer network.
What you have to do is set both cards to ad-hoc and then network them
together. How you do this depends on your cards and your operating system.
You then would tranfer the files over the network.

Wireless is definitely much more conveinent than wired solutions, bu
wired solutions still are much faster. (100Mb vs. 54Mb-fastes
wireless). If your laptop has a network port and it's fairly new, the
it's probably 100Mb capable. If your desktop using cable/dsl fo
Internet access then it probably already has a network card. Purchasin
a small switch and two more cables might be a cost effective way t
accomplish your mission and in a lot less time..

TomA has the right answer assuming the transfer is a 1 time event. If you
see yourself wanting to network the 2 computers as well to share an Internet
connection, go for a wireless router.

2 or 3 CDs? That would be 1400 - 2100 megabytes, right? 2100 is 16800
megabits, so it would take at least 3 minutes at 100BaseT speeds, at least 6
minutes for 802.11g, and at least 30 minutes for 802.11b or
10BaseT/Ethernet.

Sounds to me like a null Ethernet cable is the best bet, if both PCs support
100BaseT.

If you have USB2 or Firewire on both hosts, either one would be much faster.
If one host is Win98, doesn't seem likely that it's got better than USB1,
which is only 12mbps.
