Using two modems - a question

Hello

Janet and I currently use dial up in our PCs - one for each of us in
different rooms.

I was told not to go straight to wireless broadband but set it up on a wire
first. I would then have to buy a wireless modem router and a receiver for
each PC. I don't need wireless - it's just a way of getting two machines
working on broadband.

Would this method work?

A pal has just gone wireless and has given me his wired ASDL modem. I am
thinking of using Tiscali and will get a wired ASDL modem in the package
from them.

We currently have a phone line brought upstairs from the phone point in the
hall, this is split and a wire goes to each of our computers. We don't have
an upstairs phone.

Could I simply put a wired ASDL modem on each wire of our split phone line
and then connect direct from each modem to a PC?

Regards

John

No, you can only use one modem but you only need only one wireless receiver.
The other computer can be wired direct to the cable port of the wireless
modem.

No - you can't have more than one ADSL 'modem' on a single line.

If you don't want wireless, you could lay cat5 cable from the router to
the 2nd PC. But wireless will be easier.

Yes you could, however, you could only use one at a time (like now with
dial-up) and you would probably have to disconnect one whilst using the
other.

No. You either have to network the 'puters together (wired or wireless) -
or I guess one ADSL modem and one dialup would work together, but be a bit
pointless.

No.

You need a modem/router combination device. Either wired or wireless
that's your choice. I prefer cable myself but sometimes it's not always
practical.

This is the correct answer to your question.

As others have said, you can't have 2 ADSL devices (modems or whatever)
connected to the same line at the same time. So you'd only be able to use
one at a time and would probably have to physically unplug the one not being
used for the other one to work.

Whereas you may have had a one-at-a-time regime with a dial-up connection,
you would very soon find this irksome with broadband - and wouldn't be able
to benefit from the 'always-on' feature, giving more or less instant emails,
etc.

So you need a router modem to which both computers can connect
simultaneously. If your computers are always in the same place (as opposed
to laptops which you may carry from room to room or into the garden) I would
personally go for a wired solution. This means running an ethernet cable to
each computer from the modem. Provided that is not too difficult, I think
(though others may disagree!) that that provides a more reliable and far
more secure connection than going the wireless route - which is the other
alternative.

why not use a Ethernet homeplug ie Devolo or netgear no wireless security
problems and no cable !!

Hi,

Again - this is the correct answer to your question.

** VERIFIED **

Best wishes,

P.s. Your personal and physical circumstances probably dictate the easiest
implementation of the various choices (long leads with one usb modem, two
usb modems and telling each other to unplug the other usb modem as
necessary, wireless or wired router, etc., etc.).
