Kindly ignore the advice of jd. There's no reason Windows 98 needs a router
to share an Internet connection. However, whether or not YOU do depends on
how your ISP works and assigns IP addresses.
Most ISPs allow only one or two IP addresses without paying an extra fee,
and if you connect your broadband device to the switch then each PC on the
network tries to get its own IP address. If you're only allocated one IP
address, then only the first PC turned on can connect to the Internet. If
you're allocated two IP addresses then the first two PCs turned on will
connect but the third won't. And so on.
A router will solve this problem, because it will grab the first available
IP address from your ISP and then share it with all the connected computers.
