Which device -- the ADSL "modem," the router, or the PC -- is
responsible for logging in? Might the router be duplicating
something (i.e. PPP) that one of the other is already doing?
Perhaps inserting the router results in a login attempt on a
connection that's already established, which would definitely
slow things down in the fashion you describe.
That you can apparently insert the router without changing anything
else is what suggested the possibility to me.
Make sure you understand the login process and the allocation
of responsibility between devices.
