Using Sky DG834GT with another ISP sync problem

I've bought one of these Sky branded DG834GT routers off eBay and whilst I
know I need to flash it before I can enter my own details I thought I'd hook
it up and see what happens.

The router flashes the ADSL light orange as though it is trying to sync with
the exchange but this fails.

Should the router sync with the exchange or do I need to flash it before it
can do that? I'm wondering if the router is faulty and don't want to flash
it in case I need to 'discuss' returning it.

Thanks.

It depends. Do other routers sync okay for you? Does your internet
connection use the same ADSL settings as Sky (modulation/vci/vpi etc)?
Has the seller definitely not flashed it already and put their own ISP's
settings into it? Is it definitely the DSL sync LED which is flashing,
not the Internet (AKA "yay, authenticated!") LED?

There are lots of variables. If the variables are correct, then yes, the
DSL sync LED would stay solid and the internet LED would probably flash
as it repeatedly tries to authenticate.

Can you access the web configuration pages?

The flashing orange light will not turn green until login, which needs the
correct credentials. Do the reflash.

Check the log, I am guessing you will see "LCP allowed to come up." but
after that some message to show there has been a CHAP authentication
failure and then the modem cycles back through re-syncing.

Yes, my 2Wire syncs fine. I've no idea if Sky use the same modulation etc.
compared to a normal BT line, will have to look into it. I don't think it's
already been flashed as the username password for the admin pages is the
same as what the internet suggests it should be for a Sky router.

Its the upside down question mark that is flashing orange, then it stays off
for a few seconds then flashes orange again for a few seconds.

Yes. It says it's trying to sync with the exchange.

Thanks I'll get it sorted out.

The log didn't have any useful entries in it but I'll get it back out of the
box tomorrow and try it again.

If the log had no useful entries whatever you very well should be
concerned. Without at least the first two lines of:

{day, date & time} Initialize LCP.
{day, date & time} LCP is allowed to come up.

followed by whatever comment it makes for a CHAP authentication failure (I
never had one, so never saw that message) you may have a defective device.

Thats pretty much what I was expecting to see. The router would get a
connection to the exchange then fail to authenticate. The connection to the
exchange isn't being established so I suspect its bust.

Do make sure logging of that is enabled. On the left edge of the main
settings menu click Logs and near the bottom of the frame in the list of
"Include in Log" ensure that the third box "Router operation (start up, get
time etc)" is checked. I believe that is the default setting anyway, but I
suggest you double check it.

It should sync fine - I used my Sky router (same model) with AOL while
I was waiting for Sky to take over my line - having telneted into the
Sky router and executed pppd with my AOL username/password.

Even without hacking into the router CLI, I'd expect it to obtain ADSL sync
and get as far as attempting a PPP connection.

If it is any help, Netgears have a hidden PPP logging feature, which should
show the router negotiating a PPP conection and a failed CHAP handshake.

To enable the router's PPP logging (ppp_debug mode) try the following URL
http://192.168.0.1/?todo=ppp_debug

And to then view the ppp debug log - http://192.168.0.1/ppp_log

That's really neat. Thanks.
