Hi

Am trying to wean a friend off AOL, so as we have a new install of WinXP
I am setting up OE to fetch mail from imap.uk.aol.com, however OE keeps
saying it cant find the server, are AOLs servers down?.
On a related note if the username or password are wrong do you still get
the usual warning from OE when using AOL ?.

Cheers

Dave

What you are trying to do is mutually exclusive. You can read AOL emails
using Outlook Express but ONLY if you have an account with them. If you are
weaning a friend off of AOL then on closure of the account you loose all
access to AOL's email service which obviously includes your friend's AOL email
address.

What makes matters worse, is that there are no export facilties in AOL to
extract your address book and mail boxes to populate your email client.

Notwithstanding these problems, leaving AOL for another ISP is generally a
sensible move, but remember there are out there good, bad and positively ugly
ISPs, so make your switch wisely. Any hardware you have is reusable with your
new ISP that is served by the POTS.

Start now by getting the MAC address from AOL but be prepared for some VERY
hard selling tatics to retail your custom. Migration fees vary between ISPs,
so check those costs out before taking the plunge. So far as I am aware,
migration is only on a like basis so if you move a 512lbps service that's what
you get with your new ISP but once there you can, for a fee, upgrade to any
speed if your friends line will support it.

Dave,
I have got this working for one of my clients. My notes on how to
setup OE:

Enter your email address in full for the user account: e.g.
(E-Mail Removed)

Enter the ‘Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server': as
follows: imap.uk.aol.com

Enter the ‘Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:' as follows:
smtp.uk.aol.com

change the SMTP port to 587

NB: If your pal is on AOL Broadband, you need to tweak the MTU
setting to 1400 to avoid some Internet sites being inaccessible.
