I'm a long-standing Freeserve USB ADSL customer who is currently living
away from home.

Is there any prospect of taking my PC and ADSL modem to my new location
(which has a BT line) and using ADSL there?

Thanks,

Fred.

Yes. Providing you want to sign up to broadband at your 2nd address
*AND* pay the subscription there as well.

You can't just travel around with your ADSL modem plugging it in
anywhere that takes your fancy.

Wm ?

IIRC, your ADSL connection is bound to the phone number you first set
it up with, so, probably not.

Not just the phone number. The physical connection between your phone and
your local exchange (actually the line terminator board) is what really
counts. That's why if you move next door and keep the same number, you still
have to pay BT a fee to move the ADSL connection.

So I trust that if the new owners of your house with ADSL already installed
happen to go Freeserve, Freeserve would notice this and not charge them a
setup fee... wouldn't they? (Im not sure whether this requires sarcasm or
not)

No need for scarcasm as it just wouldn't happen! If you move house the ISP
ceases service at the old address - or else they would be liable for
continuing monthly rental. BT will charge a fresh installation fee at the new
address.

What happens if you try, and the line is ADSL activated?
I believe some ISPs check the number, some don't.

i moved house about 9 months ago. in my innocence i thought as i was taking
my phone number with me i could just plug in and be up and running with the
broadband.
not so of course and i had to get it re-enabled. but the funny thing is none
of my neighbours can get broadband and when i try the bt test it comes
though and says it is not available in my area. the broadband works fine by
the way
