If you use the free space provided by your broadband supplier, check
out whether you've been hit by the latest Googlebug:

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=pat...re&fr=yfp-t-50...

#1 result for a Virgin-hosted site

http://search.msn.co.uk/results.aspx...orkshire&geova...

#1 result

http://uk.ask.com/web?q=pattern+cutt...&o=312&l=dir&d...

#1 result

http://www.search.com/search?tag=se....q=pattern+cutt...

#5 result.

Google?

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...2F%2Ffreespace....

Google is seriously broken. That site conforms utterly to their
guidelines and always has. It validates, and uses NO trickery
whatsoever - not even <noscript> and <noframes>.

If you want to see a BT Connect example, replace 'pattern cutter
yorkshire' with 'chinese takeaway northwich' in the above searches -
same effect.

Alone among the search engines Google doesn't index ADSL free spce.

Oh I see, it's just a scam to get the web page to the top of the search
page.

I hope Mr Higgins gets his money's worth.

Hardly, old son. He already _IS_ top on every search engine but
Google.

And he can't very well got to the top of Google if it hasn't indexed
him at all, can he?

How do these people get in?

Eh? It indexes mine, and shows it in searches.

Which provider, and are you using the provider address suffixed by a
username or do you have a separate domain name registered?

The domain name is registered to me, but of course the IP address is
PlusNet's server, which google can easily check if they want to.

I guess that's what you get for trying to fool Google. Try again.

Perhaps the person who runs this website will be able to help you:

Where result were you expecting from the Google search you listed:

Ignoring the blindingly obvious (switching ISP) it just confirms there's a
benefit in registering a domain name rather than using 'free' webspace
from an ISP with their domain name in the URL... It gets mentioned in
connection with the problems of changing e-mail address if one wants
to switch ISP, and the webspace issue is sometimes mentioned, while
this just proves the point 110% :-> (Well done for making the right
choice, Peter - I guess Phil's client might be persuaded now!)

That doesn't seem to be the point.

Let's take BT's example. "Free" web space is addressed as
http://home.btconnect.com/userid/. It's suggested that the core of the
problem (with Google and only with Google) is that BrItish Telecom (and
others) returns a 404 on http://home.btconnect.com/ rather than sending
a page saying the userid is missing with a 200 status.

It seems that the Googlebot does some kind of check on what it believes
the root directory to be, and drops crawling if it gets a 404. It's
not bright enough to recognise the situation, but as I say (see the
example upthread) the others are.

Obviously registering your own domain name and 301ing it to your free
space gets round this problem - but it also adds to DNS pollution and
it simply shouldn't be necessary.

I'm wondering what the broadband suppliers think of this.
