When you go ADSL doesn't the line get tweaked in such a way that fax
becomes virtually impossible?

No, so long as the fax plugs in via a filter

What about dial-up? I've noticed that my laptop will only connect at 33.6 on
my home phone line (which has 8 Mb ADSL on it), whereas even on a crappy
phone line with a lot of audible noise on the phone, it connects at 46. I
first noticed it yesterday when I was setting up a dial-up-only PC before
taking it to a customer and though it was that PC's modem until I tried my
own PC and that connected at the same slow speed.

They are a number of fax machines that wont function correctly however on an
adsl line. I have, in the last couple of weeks, seen a brand new HP all in
one fax/printer, unable to recieve faxes on an adsl enabled line.

exactly...

*what about* dial up?
this is a broadband group and if anyone is still on dial-up in the UK then
something as technically challenging and modern as a Fax machine will be
outwith their understanding

hehehehehe

I'd have thought actually that 56 k dial-up is *more* technically demanding
of the line than fax which normally connects at 9600 and occasionally with
some faxes at 14400.

Some people are on dial-up because either their line doesn't support
broadband or else they use the internet so infrequently that they can't
justify the £15/month (typically) for broadband.

Personally, I couldn't do without broadband. I cannot imagine how I ever
managed with dialup. I had to suffer it while I was on holiday in Yorkshire
and it was painful waiting to download emails or even to access my ISP's
webmail so I could delete spam before downloading it. Even the BBC News
site, with relatively few highly-compressed small photos, took about a
minute to display.

But I have some customers who don't see the need for it: hence the
modem-only PC that I was testing for my customer yesterday when I found out
that dialup over a broadband line seems to be slower than over the noisy
line in Yorkshire with several lines multiplexed over a single pair.

Theoretically. There's nothing that specifically stps a fax machine
working but soe fax machines don't like some ADSL lines. It's all a
bit random.

Why would you want dial-up on an ADSL enabled line though. I'm sure a
couple of people could come up with a reason or 2 but 99% of the
population couldn't give a flying fuck about dial-up speeds on their
ADSL line.

Fax from a computer - yes, I believe (someone put me right on this please).
Fax from a separate fax machine, shouldn't be a problem.
