Using BEFW11S4 as Access Point Only

I purchased a new Linksys BEFW11S4 Ver 4 Wireless Router to use as an access
point only (it was cheaper than a WAP11 Access Point). I disabled the DHCP
server function in the router, and selected 'Router' mode, and connected
everything to the hub ports, leaving the WAN port unconnected.

Everything seems to work, except that occasionally the unit will drop
packets, which causes very noticeable slow downs in network performance.
When I run a long ping trace, I see an average packet loss of 3% going from
my laptop to a server on my LAN via the wireless connection. Similar pings
on the hardwired networks have no packet loss.

When I had a WAP11 installed (which unfortunately fried on me), I didn't
have this problem.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on and what I can do to fix
this?

Thanks,
Mike Schumann

I have almost the same problem. I started out with BEFW11S4 v.2, which
I had returned and got a v.4 with the same problem.

But I experience loss of both the wired and wired connection, and I
experience both package loss and totaly lost TCP connection, so that I
have to release and renew the ip.

I am currently using the device as a router (ie DHCP is on), and there
is no package loss at all.

Any good advice appreciated.

After continuing problems with this router, including having the router lock
up every half hour or so (the built in LAN switch continued to work, but the
router no longer responded to pings, nor did the wireless work), I upgraded
the firmware to Version 1.50. No improvement.

Finally, in desperation, I reconfigured the WAN port (which in my
configuration is disconnected) with a fixed address (192.168.100.1), instead
of the default DHCP option.

While I don't have a lot of hours on this yet, I have not seen any router
lockups since I made this configuration change. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed that this might solve the problem.

I have the same router and I'm also using it strictly as an AP. When a
client PC attempts to logon to the network, they get the "No domain server
could be found to authenticate your password...." After it completes the
logon on process, I can click on one of my mapped drives(which has a red X)
and it connects fine. Internet access and email is fine.

What can I do to eliminate this problem?
Thanks

Only a little buggy ;-) It probably times out on the DHCP request and
resets itself.

I used a BEFW11S4 as a WAP-only, as you describe, DHCP server turned off.
I don't recall doing anything to the adresses. The default address was
reachable for admin purposes, and I didn't fuss with anything else.

There is also an option on some versions of the firmware to set the router
as a router instead of a gateway. You would then use the WAN port to
connect to your upstream network. Advanced Tab - Dynamic Routing - Router
