Using a 2nd ADSL modem/router on existing network?

Hi,

I have a total of 3 routers, all of which are also ADSL modems etc.

The main one is a Draytek Vigor 2600VG, this takes the ADSL line and I
also use it for it's excellent VPN capabilities, so this will remain the
number one router.

I now want to position one of the other routers (either a 3COM office
connect unit or the old Netgear DG824m) in the front room, and link it
to the Draytek over Wifi so that I effectively have 4 ethernet ports in
my front room.

I've never attempted this before so could do with some pointers on
configuration, IP addressing etc.

Thanks

Unfortunately, you probably can't do this, because wireless-capable routers
can usually only work as an access point.

A couple of alternatives are to use a cable or what I'd call a "wireless
client/Ethernet bridge" (commonly sold as "wireless bridge" and/or "game
adapter"). Of course, a cable may be inconvenient and will use Ethernet
ports at both ends. A bridge will use a port only at one end, and avoid the
cable, but will be slower. Plus, last time I checked they were expensive and
didn't seem to support WPA. (Or at least the ones I looked at didn't seem
to).

Cheers Alex. Once I'd got the terminology correct "WDS Bridging",
"Wireless Bridge" etc I discovered that one of my routers can do this
(the 3Com) but the other two (the draytek and and the netgear) cannot,
so I'm going to pull the carpet up and run a cable.

Cheers for confirming what I already suspected.

OP might want to have a look at the Netgear WGPS606 wireless print
server with 4-port switch - it acts as a wireless bridge and is very
easy to set up - about 50 quid. Plus, of course it can host two
USB-based printers.

I have one to connect a Sony PS2 to a wireless LAN + a Brother laser
printer. I have also had a notebook hooked up to one of the 4 ports and
it all works fine.
