Hi,
I would like to know how it is possible to have users' user names on their
desktop wallpaper, for example 'Welcome Jonathan!' I have seen this done in a
school so know it is possible.
I'm running windows server 2003 and XP

Thanks for any help you can give

Hi,

Take a look at tool called BGInfo from www.sysinternals.com --
http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/bginfo.html

Thanks! That looks great, however there's one problem:

I ran the program as one user, logged off and logged on as another user and
the program didn't appear. How can I have the program run for every user?
Without loading the .exe file because I dont want the users to be able to
edit it!

Thanks

Hi,

Try adding BGInfo into the Startup folder of All Users, instead of just
{your user}.

To add to the All Users, right click Start > Explore and navigate to All
Users > Start Menu > Programs > Startup. Drag the BGInfo from {your profile}
> Start Menu > Programs > Startup to the Startup folder under All Users.

This should do the trick.

You might want to create an ini file and point bginfo to the ini file so
each user gets the same information instead of the default mess.

Hi,

Thanks, however if you put it in the startup folder, it will load the
program so the user can edit the contents. Is there a way to load it 'out of
view'?

Here is what I do.

1. copy bginfo.exe to %SYTEMROOT%
2. Run bginfo and save the configuration as users.bgi in the same directory
3. Create a script (bginfo.cmd) that includes the following:

c:
cd %systemroot%
bginfo.exe users.bgi /timer:0

4. Create a shortcut to bginfo.cmd and put it in "C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
5. Right click on the shortcut and choose properties and select run
Minimized.

That should do the trick.

Thanks, i've followed those steps, however the users get a message when they
log in saying 'access denied' trying to write a bginfo.bmp to C:\
Is there any way round this? I've tried creating this file in C:\ however
the same message occurs.

Thanks for the help, i've now got it working!
However I would now like to have different user groups loading different
configuration files eg:
Usernames starting with '2005' load the config file from
P:\Bginfo\05\Bginfo.cmd
Usernames starting with '2004' load the config file from
P:\Bginfo\04\Bginfo.cmd

All users have the same logon script so was thinking of a command such as
'If the username begins with '2005', then load P:\Bginfo\05\Bginfo.cmd' etc.

Would this be possible? and if so, what would the command be? I've tried:
IF %USERNAME%=2005KHAN THEN P:\Bginfo\05\Bginfo.cmd
IF %USERNAME% = 2005KHAN THEN P:\Bginfo\05\Bginfo.cmd
IF %USERNAME%="2005KHAN" THEN P:\Bginfo\05\Bginfo.cmd ... etc
But no luck with it!

Thanks!

You need to move all the files (bginfo.exe *.ini and *.cmd to a directory
that all users can write to. You can create a special folder just for that.
