When trying to set acsess rights to a folder on my computer I got the message
that it could not show the user list at that time. even after restarting.
What do I do?

There is no user level sharing with win98 on its own. You need to be
on a network with a windows NT, 2k, 2k3 or a machine running a samba
server which can provide the user list.

No, the user list is only available when there is a domain controller and a
domain network available. With only an XP computer and a Win98 computer you
cannot have a domain.

Is it correct that you must be on a domain?

I thought windows NT workstation (for example) could be a security
provider for win9x user level access without being on a domain.

I don't think so, but it's possible that you're correct.

This discussion sent me scuttling of to the bookshelf.

It appears to be the case, based on the resource kit.
I've never tried this, so I can't comment on whether it actually works.

From the Win98 res kit:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...us/wrkint.mspx

About 20% of the way down the page, section titled 'Sharing Resources'
"Note For Microsoft networks, the security provider must be a Windows NT
domain ***or workstation***. "

If it does work against an NT workstation, then it will probably work
against an XP box too.
However, there may be issues surrounding the security settings on XP and
what type of password hash is being used, LM / NTLM / NTLMv2 which will need
resolving. Like I say, I've not tried this, it's just what I've read!

Hmmm ... that's very interesting. But, IIRC, Windows NT allowed a domain
controller to store a backup user/computer access list to a workstation.
Back when servers were beaucoup expensive and most folks couldn't afford
more than one. So that might be the reference being made.

I'd like to find someone who knows for sure ...

FWIW, I just tried getting a Windows 98 SE client to pick up a user list
from both Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro computers, with no success. None
of the three were domain members.
