user account locks unexpectedly when accessing a network share in

I have this user with a laptop that connects to our network but is NOT in our
domain. He used to be able to access network shares from his laptop but
cannot do it anymore. Now he gets this message that says he does not have
any permissions and the accounts gets locked after the first try. Any ideas
