Use a wireless router as a repeater?

I am moving into a new house I built next week. I currently have a
Netgear wireless router that I use with my cable service. In the new
house I am getting FIOS from Verizon and they provide a wireless
router with the service. So I thougt I might press my current router
in to service as a repeater in a closet upstairs. I wired the house
with cat5e and put a drop in the closet. Can I do this or do I need
to buy another piece of hardware?

Thanks,
Jim
