I bought a BEFW11S4 a while ago to make a wireless network in my
house. When I came to college a couple months ago, I took it with me
so that I could use just the switch portion of it to connect both my
laptop and my desktop to the school's LAN. After a few days, my
ethernet jack was turned off, and they told me it was because of a
"rogue dhcp server." So I checked in the settings of the BEFW11S4,
and DHCP was disabled. They tell me that as long as I am sure DHCP is
completely disabled, I am free to use this device on their network.
Are there any other ways to disable DHCP besides through the device's
settings pages?

Whats the best way to connect the BEFW11S4 to a LAN to just use the
switch portion of it? The way I had it connected was with a straitght
through cable connecting the uplink port to the ethernet jack in my
dorm room.

thanks for any input

That's fine, as far as you've gone. You'll also want to disable the SSID
broadcast, set a unique SSID, and invoke WEP encryption with strong
keys. This will effectively lock out the world from using the wireless
side of your AP.
