Hi ,

I have installed a Win2k server with domain name as sales123.com and during
the installation it aske me NetBIOS name which I have given as "Network" .

Now my client says I have installed two domains? or I have configured two
Domain in the net-work.

As per my Knowledge in Win2K networking i believe that sales123.com is the
FQDN where as "net-work" is pre windows2000 domain name.

because my client says that while installing some applications it ask user
ID and password and it does not go through / validate when he uses
"sales123.com\administrator" and password
but if he uses "Net-work\administrator" it works fine.

I tried my level best to explain him that it is one domain .

Can any one suggest if I am wrong or have misguided my client.

My Win2K network is currently in mixed mode and I have not switched it to
native mode as yet.

Another thing ,If I switched it to native mode then will I get my FQDN
"sales123.com" in the logon screen ? when I will do Ctrl+Alt+Del???

Thanks & regards

Pankaj

The pre-Windows 2000 domain name (in your case "NETWORK") is used by clients
and applications that require NetBIOS for name resolution or authentication.
You haven't installed two networks, per se, but if you're dealing with
down-level clients or non-Active-Directory-aware applications, you may have
made your network configuration a bit more complicated than it needed to be.
A "Best Practice" would have been to establish the AD domain name as
"sales123.com" and to set the NetBIOS name as "SALES123".

You have the option to change the pre-Windows 2000 domain name at any time;
you might consider changing it from NETWORK to SALES123 in order to
alleviate any confusion, see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...upn_suffix.htm
for more information.

Hope this helps
Laura

Hi Laura,

Thanks for the help.
Your suggestion is 100% correct but my question remain same " Does it mean
that FQDN & NetBIOS name for the FQDN domain , points two different domain?"

I feel I should put the exact problem on which my client made hue and cry..
for this..

Two networks:
1 .) sales123.tk.com = FQDN
sales123= NetBIOS Name

2.) sales123.com=FQDN
Network = Net BIOS name.

Both the windows 2000 domain require trust relation ship for short duration
so that the network resources & Users can be migrated to the Second domain
with minimum downt time.

Having two win2k domain/ forest with same NetBIOS name may not allow a
proper two way external trustrelationship. ( am I right?)

The first Domain was removed and the trust was also removed from the network
, but some how few machines connected to the first network were remain
connected to the new network.

When I browsefor Microsoft Network I can see old domain "sales123" with few
machines in it and can ping also.. but the domain controller and other
associated servers have been removed from the network and formatted to be
used in Second Domain / network.

The problem came when one of the contractor tried to install MS Project
server ( i believe Project 2000 Server) in the second domain "network" , it
asked for user ID /password for installation in between..during the
installation of the Project Server.. he keyed in the user ID/ Password in
the following manner

PS.: Both domain 1 & 2 had same password for the administrator

So he entered like

user ID: sales123.com\administrator
password: passwd
it didn't work..

he then tried by
user ID: sales123\administrator
password: passwd

it allowed him to continue the installation ( seems it worked)
later when he tried to access it from client it didn't work , he checked in
event viewer and found "Check user ID / password" error

he uninstalled the server (MS project) and tried reinstalling . this time he
used the user ID/ Password like

user ID: network\administrator
password: passwd

and evrything started working fine all other associated application also.

Now , my client says there is two domain exist on the domain controller -one
is "sales123.com" and another is "network"

I feel this can be the problem of cached account of the first(previous
domain) which had the netBIOS name sales123 & FQDN as sales123.tk.com...as
some one or two machines of the previous domain are still connected to the
same VLAN and do show up in the network / Computer browser..

Do you feel I am right to think in this fashion.
Later my client's support guys told me that when they create any new user in
the Active Directory they get options of both domain
sales123.tk.com & sales123.com

This stupid problem has made me mad.

Please suggest , if I am in right direction or not.
Thanks & regards

Pankaj
