a friend has given me a gigabit switch. do i need gigabit networks cards
to go with it?

Probably not, as most high-speed switches will auto-negotiate with
10/100Mb devices. Try googling for the model number, or post it here.

No it should work at 100mb as well , but there's no benefit to using it over
a normal 10/100 switch unless you have faster cards
