Thanks for the responses.
Went with a Linksys WUSB54G Adapter. This is the smallish blue
external Adapter with a two.five inch antennae connected thru
USB2.0 (backwards compat w/1.0)-
It found the 'wireless' network out of the box. It also found one from
across the street (60' and thru two city structure building walls).
I had to 're-configure' the router (WRT54G) as I noted it was wide open.
Default passwords, IP address and configurations. In trying to enable
WEP I found that neither this 'new' USB based wireless Unit (nor an
older PCI based Linksys adapter w/ antennae) would connect (any longer).
I used 128 bit WEP and tried both "automatically supplying" the KEY or
manually entering it (QUESTION!! In WEP, is the KEY being entered CASE
SENSITIVE????) At any rate I tried all iterations and variation and,
while the USB adapter saw and called the signal "very good" or
"excellent" all the time, it would NOT CONNECT to the INTERNET. I also
ran the 'basic' Internet connection wizard to point the system toward
the always on broadband connection, still no joy.
WITH WEP disabled, all was fine. MAC filtering worked perfectly and I've
limited the network to the two MAC addresses of the ONLY two machines.
DHCP is limited as well.
BUT I would like WEP to work? Neither WinXP's built in wireless support
nor LinkSys' monitoring/connectivity utility would work with WEP enabled
(and yes I did stop the WinXp service completely, rebooted, etc.)
Ideas appreciated. Do you think it is just a 'firmware' issue with the
ROUTER? I noted that this router is using the VERY first version dated
March of 03...
Thanks for any help. Overall the USB Linksys adapter worked well. Fast
responses and no drops so far.
