I finally tried a USB wireless antenna (all net branded looks like a 4
inch high tapered deoderant stick) with my laptop and surveyed the
neighborhood. My 11b AP and 11g bridge had good pickup for several
hundred feet up and down street and still detectable all the way
around block between houses -I guess about 1000 feet at max. The usb
has a flat base and sat nicely on the roof as I did a slow explore
next block up and found 2 more networks down in 8% range. If I decide
to do download net stumbling software I will have to glue a magnetic
base to the device but the USB cable is about 7' long and solves the
pigtail length vs optimal mounting problem people talk about with PC
cards to cantennas. I hope to figure out a simple way to
directionalize and focus it. It is so compact and clean for stumbling
I would hate to drill and solder a pigtail on the board. If possible
would like a handheld horn that the tapered antenna could be inserted
into.
