USB Wifi

Is it technically possible to get a USB to PCMCIA adaptor like PCI to PCMCIA
adaptors?

Technically possible.
Can you buy one - not to my knowledge.
There are a number of real problems with making one, essentially USB
isn't fast enough to talk to the card without confusing the existing
drivers.
So if you made a "dumb" one, it wouldn't work with a substantial number
of cards.
You'd then need to offload some of the processing onto the adaptor side,
away from the PC.
This would probably work for 95% of cards - after you've written a
special driver for them, assuming you could get documentation.

In practice - no.

Though product details on this are sketchy, the only references I can
find quickly to this product seem to all indicate it's for disk drives
only.
It won't work with a random PCMCIA card you plug in.

Given that WiFi adapters are available in both USB and PCMCIA versions, why
would you need an adapter? However, to answer your question, you can get a
USB adapter in a PCMCIA card. I haven't heard of any going the other way.

I have a cardbus one in my desktop using a PCMCIA adaptor card, and want to
REUSE it on machines with USB to save me carrying around a PCI card. DUH

It's not clear that would work with wifi PC card.
Not to mention that for $87 you can buy Orinoco USB adaptor,
not only it's sure to work, but you will then have two wifi's to play with.

This may very well be the case. I'm just responding to the fact that the
item that was claimed to not exist actually does exist, nothing more.
