how could i make my application deal with a usb barcode device?

Don't know. You've posted to a newsgroup which supports Microsoft's
Broadband Networking hardware and software only, and should be posting
perhaps to a support group for whatever application you're using.
Hopefully, you'll find a solution in a more appropriate support area.
