Usb modem on wireless connection

Thanks to anyone who can offer any advice.

I have USB ADSL modem, I do not want to change this but do want to set up a
wireless network between the PC that this modem is connected to and a
laptop. It would seem you cannot connect a USB modem to a router as they use
Ethernet connections.

I am just so unclear as to if I need a wireless router or wireless access
point. An easy way out would be a wireless router with a built in modem but
I've heard that this can cause problems with some ISP's (AOL).

Can I use a router like an access point and leave the modem connected to the
main PC? I know that in this configuration the PC will have to be on to
allow the laptop to access the internet through the modem.

I assume that how ever I can achieve this that it would be possible to share
the modem and have both computers using it at the same time?

Sorry if I sound a bit dumb but the more I read the more confused I'm
getting.

Anyway thanks again for any help.
Eddy

I have a desktop and laptop connected with a wireless network and it
works just fine. You don't "need" a router, providing you are happy to
leave your "main" PC switched on and connetced to the internet. I have
a Belkin usb adaptor (model no. F5D6050) plugged into my desktop, and a
centrino setup on my laptop. Both are using the Windows config routine
to set them up as a peer to peer network. You need to be methodical
setting them up.

IMHO people make the whole networking thing a lot more complicated than
it needs to be.

Cheap and effective.

It is possible to buy a USB to ethernet adapter. I used one with my previous
PCs to avoid opening them up and fitting an ethernet card. It will slow things
down a bit.

that's a USB ethernet network interface, which plugs into the USB port
of a computer and presents an ethernet socket.

It isn't something that's going to provide a USB socket for a USB
modem and allow you to plug it into the ethernet WAN socket of a
router.

"USB to ethernet adapter" is IMO a misnomer, as people think of them
as an adaptor for two different sizes of plug rather than a means to
connect a computer to a network via a serial bus.

Thanks Everyone,

Much as I expected. Not a problem to leave the one with the modem in on all
the time.
I am about to try the Belkin USB wireless adaptor on 2 pc's. I suppose one
more question needs to be asked. Doing it as a adhoc/peer to peer setup, how
many pc's can be connected together ??

Thanks again everyone
Eddy

That really depends on your needs. Peer to peer is cheaper but cost
saving is relative - wireless routers are so cheap these days
especially when you weigh up the time you are going to spend using the
Internet. Having a router I believe makes things more simple not more
complicated and more easy to manage even with just 2 PC's.

I have personally used both solutions (peer to peer and router) and
give support on both set ups. To be able to be PC independent is v.
convenient. The 'router' route makes for a much more reliable internet
browsing experience. IMHO its easier to set up an 'internet sharing'
network with a router (wired or wireless) than peer to peer and much
more versatile.

I would say that if your use is going to be infrequent, go for the peer
to peer using microsofts ICS. Otherwise if you are a more serious
Internet user then put a router at the heart of your set up.
