If you're just getting a basic 512kbps home service then the bottle neck
will be (as always) your connection to your ISP. It won't make a difference
to speed.
If you're just connecting your laptop you might want to think about a
wireless router, enjoy broadband throughout your entire home

If you do go
wireless don't be conned into shelling out anything for 802.11g kit or
anything that promises "up to 54mbps" speed. Go for the much cheaper 802.11b
kit, it has a maximum throughput of 11mbps and the 802.11g stuff has a max
*practical* throughput of about 19mbps in ideal conditions (rarely met).
