Well it could be in loads of areas. Obviously first thing I'd try (least
expensive), is just making sure you have the right and latest drivers
for your mobo chipset, the latest drivers for your usb, the latest
drivers for your modem, then go and update Windows.
As to anything else you can try, I'll leave that to other people.
Im guessing though with your USB modem, you probably wont be able to
find out the stats on your line, which means there's an increased chance
of being fobbed off by your ISP/BT.
Just thinking though... Obviously try connecting to your master socket
if not already done, try with new filters, buy another modem or another
motherboard... Frankly with MaxDSL and potential limitations on USB
Modems, and also the possibility of ADSL2 ADSL2+ in terms of LLU, it
might be worth investing in a new ethernet modem anyhow. Im trying an
ADSL2MUE modem (if Amtrak ever gets around to delivering it today - it's
last status, with the driver. that was 9am)
I've got a green frog alcatel usb modem that's been rock solid for me
that I might be selling today :-)
