I am not a gamer just some of the observed pros and cons regarding modem
connected via USB or in a PCI slot. Also any preference regarding model and
type, no additional connection for networked PC is needed in my case.

Thanks for any help

PCI modems should pretty much work in every computer with PCI slots whereas
USB ones can be problematic. Only yesterday I had to install a PCI USB card
into a customer's computer whose VIA chipset motherboard refused to
communicate with an Intel USB modem. I offered him a Conexant chipset PCI
modem but as this was 3 times the price of a 6 port USB2.0 adapter card
which on top of it left him with 5 free USB2.0 ports the modem lost out.
The generic Conexant chipset ADSL PCI modems have the fastest ping times and
are practically problem free but they don't come with a Linux driver which
rules them out for some customers.

After weeks of problems with the Alcatel Speedtouch modem supplied by
Freeserve, I bought one of the Conexant chipset ADSL PCI modems reviewed by
www.adslguide.org.uk and have been very pleased with it. It was easy to
install, gets good ping times and I think it was money well spent.

Thanks a lot for the tip. I am about to get ADSL into the home and it looks
like PCI modem it is.

Any preferences regarding ISPs as in PlusNet or Pipex?

Well, I've been with Pipex for some 16 months now (BTO before, spit, spit,
spit) and I could mention a few things:
1) Connectivity has been excellent, just 2 breaks of service (half an hour
and 2 hours) in that time that I noticed
2) Email servers can apparently be problematic (I've got my own co-located
servers so that does not concern me)
3) When I first joined the news servers were excellent, since then they've
deteriorated into uselessness so I've been using the free news.cis.dfn.de
(which has recently changed name for new users)
I now have Pipex at work, at home and ex-home (yep! For the benefit of my 13
year old. We now Skype-ing everyday after school).

Thanks for the reply. I just signed up with Plus Net. Their first time
starter pack is £25 a month and if you do a years contract they wave the
£50 connection fee and give you a USB modem. Considering that this package
for without anything is £22 per month and for first timers you have to
shell out £50 for connection fees, I decided to go with them for a year and
by than many more options should be available.

Really? ('Important if true' I nearly bought one of these a bit back,
and...)

Google (conexant adsl linux pci) seems to show at least two sources for
drivers available...(from Data Technics and methinks.co.uk)
