I've crossposted as I'm not sure which is the right group to ask in.

I've been trying to find the answer on Google, but I don't understand this
enough to filter my search properly.

I've got a laptop (Win XP), a desktop (Win2K) and a USB networking cable.
I've run the installation program that came with the cable, but there's no
GUI and no instructions on the disc. I really haven't a clue then what I
need to do next to get them talking to each other.

Thanks if someone could point me in the right direction.

JB

I assume you mean a USB to USB data link cable.

what software (name) came with it ? do they have a web page where you could
download the software again.

you could also try Genelink software GL620 GeneLink File Transfer

http://www.genesyslogic.com.tw/econtents/tech.asp

though I am not sure it will work with your cable.

You need something like Laplink to set up the window so that you can move
files as in Explorer, with a click-and-drag movement.

Others will tell you to use Win XP's direct cable connection application,
but I have yet to see a really satisfactory method of using this facility.

Remove "nospam" from return address.

Can you identify whether or not your laptop and PC have ethernet
capability?

It would be a whole lot easier if you network using this method, IMO.

No, it's clearly identified as being "net link" (as opposed to "data link")
by it's part no.

No downloads available here :

http://www.prolific.com.tw

Setup installs a "USB-USB network bridge driver" and that seems to be all.

I don't really think there's software problem though, more just the lack of
information.

Hmm, looks like it's specific to their cable, but maybe you're in that I
need a third party app. (I thought a wizard would automate and then windows
would just take care of it).

Thanks JB

Well maybe then, but not ready to give up on this just yet as it can be
done. I found this (very long) thread when I was googling.

http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showth...?threadid=9261

But, unless I've missed something, the guy doesn't say how he's done it.
Guess I'll read it again though and make sure.

Not keen on the idea of parallel/serial, and it would also mean hardware
complications on this box.

Thanks, JB

You don't need a software package to share files. You just need to set up
the files you want to share, the computer names, and allow file sharing. The
cable software is apparently setting up an adapter driver just as you would
have in eithernet cards. On the XP machine go in help and read the
information on setting up a home network. There is probably information on
the 2k machine also...........

Sure, they both do.

Well, guess I could explore that if I have to then, but this is what the
laptop vendor supplied.

Wouldn't I have a problem with that though - the desktop's ethernet card is
plugged into my cable modem?

Thanks JB

Also do a google search on 'setting up a home network' You will find lots of
instructions. Work around the fact you are using a USB cable and drivers as
the network connection. One page is

Have you actually DONE this, or like me, are you assuming that all the stuff
in the help files leads to an idiot-proof and easy solution? I can assure
you, it is not easy, and having tried to set up a DCC for about 2 weeks, I
gave up and went back to good old Laplink!
