You need a driver for the USB-to-LAN card installed on your Linux
to make Linux connect to the router.
If the manufacturer does not supply a Linux driver
one or there isn't a free one available,
then you just wasted your money.
Googling for "ADM8511 Pegasus II Ethernet Linux"
turns up plenty of web pages on setting up the device for Linux.
Alternatively, buy an old $10 PCMCIA ethernet card, and it should
all work once you plug it in.
Personally, I would use a $20 PCMCIA WiFi adapter for the laptop
and then use a $50 wireless router with say a 4 port switch
to connect to the net. And then you have freedom to move
the laptop around the house, whilst also connecting to the desktop PC.
