I have a Belkin wireless netword card plugged into my laptop. It connects
fine to the router (I think) however it doesn't come back with a valid IP
address. Somebody suggested I use an ethernet cable to plug directly into
the router so that I know the settings are correct.

Now, I don't have an ethernet port in my laptop so I bought a USB adaptor.
Now, I have my USB adaptor plugged into my laptop with the ethernet cable
running from it to my router.

Now, how do I get the settings etc?

Either click on the network properties and browse to tcp/ip and see
what address you have or open a cmd window (start ->run) and run
ipconfig
