Hi

I'm trying to find a USB ADSL modem to have as a backup should my router
fail. However, every one I've been able to Google so far has indicated use
in XP and below, nothing for Vista and Win 7. I seem to recall that when
Vista came out, most of these devices wouldn't work.

Any recommendations please?

Meanwhile, at the uk.telecom.broadband Job Justification Hearings, JIP chose the
tried and tested strategy of:

Get a spare ADSL router as a backup.

Don't , they are rubbish and not recommended for use with ADSL2 or
higher speed services. They are OK up to 8Mbps, but can't handle
much above that. They are not compatible with a number of ISPs such
as BE, o2, Tiscali, Virgin etc. Company web sites will give you this
info. I have one with Singtel firmware and one with BT firmware, both
sync at lower speeds than routers using Broadcom chips.
They don't have upnp and are a lot bigger than a normal router.
They used to be OK but the Internet and DSLAM equipment has moved
on. You also risk having your 2700 updated and made unusable as
old DNS poisoning doesn't work. The router still "calls home"!
Forget a 2700HGV, you are better with a cheap Netgear DG834G v4.
The v4 is compatible with the latest equipment used in phone exchanges
which will give a higher sync and better stability and throughput.

To re-iterate what somebody else said, get a spare router. The cheapest
I've found that is worthwhile is:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edima...tch-(Trendchip)

at £27.95 plus delivery

Facilities: DDNS, ACL for remote management, port mapping through NAT for
VNC or the like, bridge mode (useful where you have 2 ADSL services and use
this router as a modem in front of a Vigor for load sharing).

Of course some of them fail from time to time but at at that price they're
easy to keep in stock as spares.

I see. So it's worthless to anyone other than you then?

Extending that principle to your _opinions_, its a wonder you bother to
post anything at all.

Frankly, I've now got two spare routers that work pretty well, and three
belkins that work sometimes, except when they don't..

The world is AWASH with 'free' routers given away by the BTs and
talktalks, pre programmed, that actually work pretty well - certainly
well enough to be used as spares.

My favorite is my trusty old D-link DSL-504. Out of the ark, slow but
rock solid.

I got it second hand on fleabay about 5 years ago for £25.
