As per Subject line; I would like to purchase my own USB ADSL modem and
would appreciate any recommendations. Price and reliability are obvious
considerations.

Thanks in advance,
Simon.

My only advice is don't!

Buy an external ethernet router, and a network card if necessary.

You _won't_ be sorry.

Pete.

My advice would be to steer clear of usb modem. They can be very
temperamental due to usb power consumption and its effects on your system.
You would be better off with a PCI adsl modem, or even better, a router,
which really are not much more than modems nowadays.

For just ordinary Internet surfing, any network card with Realtek 8139 chip will work fine.

If you would like to build an intranet behind the router and big file transfer may occur among machines. Get some network card with 3COM or Intel chip is better.
I am using Intel PRO/VE in my desktop PC. It works fine.

I'm very happy with my Speedtouch 510v4 router (99 inc VAT from Broadband
store).

Network card : I'm using an old DLink 530 (I think!) but most network cards
are OK these days.

Go for an OEM one. Much cheaper because there's no box!

Pete.
