USB Adapter is lost on reboot

I can get my USB wireless adapter to work great except
when I reboot my computer and XP starts back up, the
adapter is no longer configured or found. XP says it has
found a new USB device but does not know what it is. So
if I go to device manager, an unknown device is listed
under the USB devices. I don't know what to do next.
Thanks.
