USB 500 & Wires Only

Is the engineer fitted faceplate splitter the only difference between USB
500 and "wires only"?

Just that a "friend" has two lines coming to his house. Originally the first
one had ADSL via BT before "wires only" came out and involved an engineer
calling round and installing a splitter in place of the existing master
socket. He then discontinued this service and had a "wires only" service set
up on the 2nd line but swapped the faceplate splitter to do away with having
multiple filters on all the extensions.

Know the first installation is this USB500?

The reason I ask is that I have put in a request to have my "wires only"
install upgraded to 1mb but in the FAQ on adslguide.org it says that
currently the 1mb upgrade is only available to "wires only" installs as they
ran into some probs with USB 500.

So I'm thinking if the only difference is the faceplate splitter will I need
to swap them back and start using microfilters?

Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance for your help

Yes, the faceplate and the fact thatyou technically rent the supplied USB
modem while on the USB 500 service...

The problem is not the faceplate filter - that will work fine with the one
1mb service - I use one here with a 2mb line.

The problem with going from USB 500 to "wires only" 1MB is to do with
internal BT/ISP "processes/paperwork" issues like "What do BT/the ISP do
with the supplied USB modem?" - its not a technical problem.

Regards
Sunil

nice one Sunil - just a matter of my "friend" waiting for the upgrade to go
through.
T
he reason for the question was the following text taken from the ADSL FAQ -
but I guess that could relate to the paperwork problem you mentioned.

I have the engineer installed USB 500 service can I migrate to Home 1000?
For those people who have the BT IPStream 500 product, in other words the
USB 500 engineer assisted install product then unfortunately migration is
not currently available as an option.

A limited trial did take place earlier this year, but hit some snags. It is
believed that this should be fixed in early October, but there is no
guarantee the migration will be in place in time for the start of the trial.
