US Robotics Cable Router

This evening I am going to a friends house to see if we can sort a problem
with his home network and I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on what
might be the cause of the problem.

His set up is an NTL (Virgin?) cable system. The standard NTL cable modem
feeds the US Robotics router via an Ethernet cable. There are then two
computers A and B plugged into the router, again by Ethernet cable. If
only one computer is on, it connects perfectly well to the internet, but if
both computers are on they freeze when attempting to access the internet.

He has tried switching the cables around to no effect although I intend
taking a couple more to try out. Other than that, my thoughts so far are
a faulty network card, although that seems unlikely as each PC works when it
is connected on its own, or a problem with the router's switch. I have a
switch in my own system which I will take round and connect between his
router and the computers.

Is there anything else that anyone is aware of that could cause this
problem?

Have both of his computers got the same IP address? They need to be
different.

I will certainly check that but the router is supposed to issue the dynamic
numbers to the computers using DHCP so it ought not to happen. Thanks for
the thought, it is something that hadn't occurred to me.

The symptoms are a bit like the NTL modem connected to a LAN port on
the router instead of the WAN port.

Can the computers access each other ?

They have never tried that. I will see if I can get them talking tonight.
Digby's suggestion is a possibility because I know he did have it
disconnected at one point.

I will see how it transpires.

That is what I call lateral thinking. He did have the router disconnected
at one time so it could have been plugged back wrongly. That is the first
thing I will look at this evening.

Thanks,

Keith

I am now using one of the PCs in question. We can get them both up and
running on the internet and they perform perfectly but, if either machine is
turned off it will not connect to the internet again until the router is
rebooted. The router is a US Robotics model USR8004. I cannot fathom
any reason for the way this is working. Any suggestions please?

Bug in the router?
Look for a firmware update for it?

You could try the following:

1 Switch everthing off including the modem (not just on standby)
2 Wait 2 minutes
3 Power up Modem and wait for lights to settle down
4 Power up router, againm wait for lights to settle down
5 Power up PC's
