URGENT PLEASE RRAS PROBLEM

Hello everyone
I'm seting up a Windows2003 Sever to allow vpn connections.
inside my network everything works fine i tested from some pcs and they can
conect to my server...
the problem is when i try to connect from internet ...
when the connection is verifying username and password... after several
seconds give me the error 721.
I think the problem is on the router (DSL - AlcatelSpeedtouch 500 series).

I have the 1723 port open pointing to my server Ip address

to test proposes I opened the ports 80 and 3389 (web server and terminal
server) and this services are working fine, i can see the web site and
I can connect to the server via T.S.

I search on the web and it seams that there is a problem with the
Protocol - 47 Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE), I'm a newbie in vpn and i
don't know how to solve this problem....

My router configuration Ip is 192.168.2.2
My server configuration Ip is 192.168.2.254 (Only have one nic on the
server)

I have the ports 1723,80,3389 open on the router pointing to 192.168.2.254.
The web service and T.S are working fine but vpn isn't.

Another thing in other sites that we have I have linksys routers (cable
internet) with similar configuration and everything works fine I just open
the ports 1723 and vpn is working (after the Rras configuration on server of
course...)

Can anyone help me with this .....
My Boss wants to kill me I need to make this work...
Thanks in advance....

Yes, it probably is a GRE problem. The data travelling across a pptp
connection is encrypted and then encapsulated. The encapsulation header is a
modified GRE header. If anything in the path blocks GRE, no data can pass
and the connection fails.

Check the DSL router info for a way to enable GRE. If there is nothing
by name or by protocol number look for things like pptp pass-through or even
vpn pass-through mode.

If you have it configured exactly as the web site example it should
work. I can only suggest you double check the protocol 47 entry, then post
to that web site with a query.

Hello Bill

Problem solved ...

Yah..

Finally I discovery the problem.

Well there were some problems to solve..

Let's recap

Configuration

Windows 2003 Server Pdc

Only 1 Nic

Ip: 192.168.2.254

Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.2.2 (Router Alcatel Speed Touch 510I Software
Vers.4.0.2.0.0)

Dns: 192.168.2.254

80 client workstations.

RRas allow vpn connections.

Problem:

Testing internally the vpn connections they worked fine, from internet when
the connection is verifying username and password... after several
seconds give me the error 721.

I followed the configuration described in
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=94

Problem remains...

After trying very different configurations, I noted that in my network
places I couldn't saw any workstation.. Strange a few days ago everything
was working fine???

No user complaints, I decided to check some workstations, and I could see
that in their network places they could see all domain workstations but they
couldn't see the pdc server..

I asked the users if they experienced problems with authentication or
accessing to their network drives or any error about saving profiles on
server when logging off, and the answer was no. Then I ping the server and
it was ok, I ping the dns fqdn and ok again..

But in the server I couldn't see the workstations and in workstations I
couldn't see the server.

Well this must be a Dns problem I thought.

Then I decided to backup the dns and rebuild it again, after that everything
was working normal everyone could see "everybody".

Then I thought is this dns problem related with my vpn problem????

Well there is only one way to find out, let's try again.

And voilà is working ....

So in conclusion..

The configuration described in
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=94 is needed to create the
protocol GRE to make Vpn work and its really simple to create this protocol
by telnet.

But make sure everything is working ok in our domain to make everything
work.

In my researches I could see that many people experienced this problem and
in most sites they say that this router doesn't work with vpn pass-through
mode but in fact the router works after the changes are made, just make sure
everything is working ok even if a day ago apparently everything was working
ok, especially the Dns that is vital to AD.

For you Bill thanks for your time and I hop that this message helps many
people.

Regards to everybody.
