Hi i am looking for some antivirus software specifically for home networks,
i.e. one installation that will update the network in one go.

I used to use Sophos, as i got it free with work but have moved on from
there, and not able to use Sophos.

I have priced it up and its going to be £99 for 3 machines, i dont really
want to pay this for just one year.

Is there any cheaper software available or even free network anitivirus.

TIA

Daniel

AVG Antivirus appears to be $105 for a SoHo 5 machine licence, but if
you need the Network edition thats $150 for 5 machines, which is still
cheaper.

Why do you need a network solution? Why not just download the update
file, copy it to each machine and run it locally? I used to store the
update on a shared drive, and run a script at login to run the update.

AVG on each machine, set to auto-update.

Free, and infinitely better than Sophos, too.

You may be able to store the software and data files on a network drive
and run them on workstations -- no need to copy. I do this with command-
line software.

I thought that was what I said in the final sentence.
The reason I copy the files now is that I replaced the always-on
server/router with a hardware router. I update my main machine (which
isn't always on and doesn't have any shared drives) then copy the files
to the other machines which do have shared drives and users run them
when they arrive on the desktop.

Tendency to false positives in my limited experience.

Daniel,

Most of the free AV software only allows you to use it on a limited
number of machines for home use. You need to check the licence
conditions to see what the limitations are on each.

If you want to stay completely legal, there's nothing to stop you
putting (say) AVG on one machine, Avast! on another and BitDefender on
the third.

Incidentally I have used all three of the AV products I have listed
above and found them all to be good. To aid your selection try the
following: http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/

Regards,
Edwin the Elf.
