I'm looking at UPS for my server and for my PC. As the PC gets more use than
the server and seems more prone to problems when the power fails, I'll get
one for the PC first. I've had a look around. Amazon's prices seem pretty
competitive although I won't buy from Amazon (had a problem with them
billing me then waiting a month before sending me a book that should have
been sent and delivered within 7 days).

I've heard of Belkin and of Hewlett Packard. I've never heard of APC as a
brandname before. I see the APC is the cheapest. Is it cheap because it's
rubbish or because it takes a funny battery available only from them?

What I need in my UPS is a commonly available battery (I realise the battery
will need replacement every 3 years or so). I need reliability from it too.

So, if anybody can suggest good brands/models/prices, I'll be very pleased
to hear about it all.

Can certainly recommend APC UPSs. Work very well:-)I've got an APC 1200
BackupPro and it serves most of my network kit and a couple of gateway
machines for about 20 or 30 minutes without any problems whatsoever.

I'd avoid anything Belkin, myself, except maybe their KVM switches.

APC is the market leader and is a very reputable brand. I wouldn't
consider any other manufacturer. I've had some experience of their
customer service which was also first-rate.

If you buy a UPS from APC then I would expect them to be able to replace
the battery after three years or more. If you buy the UPS to use a
particular type of battery you might find that type is not available
three years from now.

It's quite possible that three years from now you will be able to buy a
new UPS for less than the cost of a replacement battery. What makes you
think that batteries only last three years anyway?

APC are one of the biggest names in the PC UPS market, their machines
use off the shelf batteries as well, so you should have no problems
getting replacements. Belkin seem to exist to fleece home users who
think a gold plated modem cable will get them a better download speed,
having said that, I have no direct experience of their UPS line. HP UPS
would be a Compaq, which in turn was a rebadged Merlin Gerin unit IIRC.
Merlin Gerin manufacture some really high quality gear, Obviously, the
HP unit you have seen might be different though.

Replacement depends on how many times you trip it, how hard you run it
when it's tripped and how far it discharges, some sites I see replace
batteries twice a year. All UPS I see sacrifice battery life for fast
charge, so running one flat will kill the batteries quickly (not only
because you aren't supposed to run SLAs flat) as the charge will reduce
the battery life.

For Mass Market users APC are the only supplier you should be looking
at.
As for the others you mention they will be rebadged ones I think
Belkin rebadge some APC.

If you have a bit more to spend look at keysource ones.

APC are a good make to go for, they're what we always fit when they're
needed in clients properties. We've fitted 350VA upto 5KVA and haven't
had any problems.
They also take standard SLA batteries, the same as most other big name
UPSs.

As a recommended guide. It's a good idea to test them every year and
replace them when they start showing signs of fatigue, they can last a
lot longer if looked after.

You won't go far wrong with APC, if you have a look around their
website you'll get a good idea of what you're dealing with.

What about this one?

http://www.savastore.com/products/pr...&pid=45&tid=3#

It's a Trust product but as long as the circuitry is OK, I can always change
the battery - that's easy enough. I have a huge battery shop nearby that
sells every kind of battery known to man It'll probably have something
like a 6v, 9v or 12v battery inside. Those are pretty cheap and easy to get
It's most likely got a motorbike battery inside.

It one of those things the magazines won't tell you for a trouble free
life because they need the advertising , buy UPS from APC, your inkjet
printers from Hewlett-Packard, dot matrix printers from Epson, and
lasers from HP or Brother.

Belkin are really just a supplier of grossly over priced cables.
