With ADSL there are different speeds for upload and download.

How does that work then with a VPN over adsl, who is actually doing
the upload?

Each direction will be limited by the slowest link in the path.
Assuming the slowest link is the upload (client to Internet) link,
that means both directions would operate at the upload speed, or
thereabouts.

We use ADSL for our VPN to connect our 2 factories.
Our ADSL connections are 512K download and 256K upload.
This means the VPN can transfer data at a maximum of 256K.
I think all ADSL connections are limited to 256K upload so you will have
this problem no matter what speed download you go for.

I believe SDSL is being rolled out over the UK at the moment which allows
for faster upload speeds but your exchange needs to be SDSL enabled and it
costs quite a bit more.
Not sure if you need special hardware for SDSL or if ADSL routers will work.

We use 2 DrayTek 2600 VPN ADSL routers if you're interested and they work
great.
Never had a problem with them.

Guessed as much.

I've got that model too, probably didn't need to buy such an expensive
modem but heard good reports on the newsgroups.

I've had a short go with VPN but not to any great length but as my
daughter has just had adsl connected I want to have another go.

As somebody said, one side is always uploading, so 256kb is what you'll
get.

Should be faster over cable, or a dedicated line (big bucks).

SDLS is, as has been said, available in some areas (biggish bucks).

With some ISPs you can have several ADSL lines which contribute to the
bandwidth; for about 5 times the price of a single ADSL line you get 4,
giving you 1024 kb/s over the VPN.
