I have a five port hub with one uplink port. As a complete beginner in this
field can anyone please explain what is the function of the 'uplink' port.

The uplink port is provided to allow you to connect this hub to another one.

If you had another hub somewhere with one wire run to a spot in the room and
you wanted to connect 5 more devices, you could attach the wire to this
hub's uplink port and then plug in the 5 devices.
