Hi,

A friend has BT Broadband (not sure which flavour). She experiences
regularly ADSL disconnects. This may be due to line problems but I
would like to try a firmware upgrade on her Voyager 205 modem.

She is using a BT Voyager 205 as supplied by BT. With some Googling
and the excellent site

http://corz.org/comms/hardware/route...ter.how-to.php

I have logged on to the router via telnet and found the current
firmware is 1.1 . In fact the full system parameters are

$get system

Model : Viking
Name : voyager
Domain Name : home
Description : DSL Modem
Location : GlobespanVirata Inc.,100 Schulz Drive, Red Bank,NJ
07701,U.S.A
Contact : GlobespanVirata Inc.,100 Schulz Drive, Red Bank,NJ
07701,U.S.A
Vendor : GlobespanVirata Inc.,100 Schulz Drive, Red Bank,NJ
07701,U.S.A
LogThreshold: 1
Object-id : 1.3.6.1.4.1.50000
HwVersion : 810020
SwVersion : V1.1
DSL Version : Y1921a
System Time : Sun Oct 23 07:08:37 2005
Time Zone : GMT
DST : On
Services : physical datalink internet end-to-end applications
UpTime(HH:MM:SS) : 0:14:49
Backup Interval : Disable
$

Now I have also downloaded the latest 1.8 firmware from the BT site
- so optimism is high.

However, the only way to upgrade the firmware seems to be through
the modem's Web interface. Now, I log on to the Voyager and I see all
the menu options down the left-hand side

Quick-Start
Trouble-shooting
Advanced

I click on "Advanced" twice as directed in the BT instructions. All I
see is the "Quick Start" page which shows me the connection status,
uptime, bytes transmitted and received etc. In fact I only ever see
this statistics page whatever link I click on. The router sometimes
prompts me for a userid and password and sometimes does not. I guess
this navigation problem is due to a Web broken interface that might be
cured by the firmware upgrade.

The point of all of this is I can't get to the page on the Voyager
Web interface where I can load the new firmware - the page just can't
be navigated to. Is there any way I can upgrade the Voyager firmware
using the CLI?

I could bring up my Net DG824M for a weekend and see how stable that
is - but it would be nice to get this simple Voyager device stable.

Thanks

Clive

be due to a combination of Norton Internet Security and Browser setting
causing JavaScript to be blocked. The Voyager 205 config pages,
including those to upload new router firmware, use lots of JavaScript.
I am also told there is a tftp upgrade command-line option. I will
investigate that.

The description of the problem pretty well describes what happens with
my BT Voyager 205 Router when Zone Alarm is running.

Test with no firewall:
Disconnect Voyager from phone line.
Terminate / shut down firewall software.
Go to voyager.home and try your luck.

Mine does all its stuff on voyager.home with no firewall.

Hi Clive I had a simular problem. I am using a Belkin router but might be
worth a try. I changed the MTU setting from 1400 to 1454. Since then no more
disconnets, been two months now.

Regards, Ian.
