Hello,

We have a 2 AD in Windows 2000. We plan to upgrade to Windows Server 2003.
Because of the hardware constrains, I dont think we can upgrade the server
OS so I want to start with a new machine. My only concern now is what happen
to the DNS, WINS and DHCP that I have in the existing server ? How can I
transfer those services to the new server ? Is there any way to copy or just
replicate those services to the new server ? Thanks for your reply

You don't have to transfer anything. Just setup all three of them with the
same settings on the new machine. Change the DHCP scope's Options to point
the clients at the new WINS and DNS. For "static" machines you will have
to make the changes manually. The WINS and DNS databases will automatically
self-populate on their own after a very short time,...in fact DNS should
simply replicate from the old one by normal AD replication. Point the new
Server to "itself" (127.0.0.1) as the primary DNS & WINS but you can list
the other DNS's & WINS's under that as well. Just remember to take the old
ones out later if you "retire" them.

The only thing to watch out for is that you don't want the new DHCP to be
active at the same time the old one is, so disable the DHCP on the old
server at the same time you enable it on the new one. The old DNS & WINS can
keep running. Give the clients a day or so to automatically adjust and
"settle in" before you do anything drastic to the old server.

Never remove an old DC without first "gracefully" removing it from AD by
running Dcpromo.exe to drop it down to a "member" server, and then move it
from the Domain to a Workgroup (stand-alone server) before you kill it
totally. The Global Catalog Server "role" must be changed manually to the
new machine because that one is not automatically adjusted by Dcpromo.exe as
the other "roles" are.

Thanks for your reply,

I've just wondering if there is any tools to import an existing record on
old DNS server to the new server ? same for DHCP.

DNS: Like I said,...it will replicate via Active Directory,..and even if it
didn't, it would populate with new entries the first time the clients boot
up while using it as their DNS.

DHCP: Meaningless pretty much. Like I said, ..just set it up the same as
the old once. Disable the old one, enable the new one,...don't run both at
the same time.

Ok, clear on DHCP. On DNS, we also use it as our internal DNS Server which
will forward the queries to External DNS Server. We also have another 2
forward lookup zone for our external domain. This is what I want to transfer
to the new server. Can we copy it over to the new server ? I saw an article
on Support websites mentions about it but it looks scary for me as I will
need to change registry settings.

Ok,...well, I wish you revealed all this up-front. I'm not sure what to do
about that,...their may be tools for that but I'm not personally aware of
any. Wait around and see if anyone else knows about that.

How were those put there to start with?...manually entered? Perhaps just
put them in the new one as the old one was done.

Well, thanks for coming back. I've just did a zone transfers from old DNS to
new DNS and it works. And i'm happy to say that after testing, XP client be
able to connect to DC and also browsing the Internet. I will look after this
server for a 2-3 days before I upgrade it to Win2k3. If the servers looks
fine and solid, I can start my Exchange2k3 deployment on sunday. Thanks
again ..

OK, sounds good. Just do a lot of study before tackling Exchange. It makes
changes to AD that aren't reversable. Exchange will either beat you to death
or "make a man outta ya", which ever comes first.
