I am looking into buying a used laptop which won't have wireless as
standard. The model could be Sharp PC-GP1515.

Is it straightforward/possible to upgrade to wireless?

Is simply a wireless card in one ofd the slots (PCMCIA?)

Yes, exactly that, doing it here with a Vaio.
If you can try and get the same make PCMCIA card as your WAP, they tend
to play together better.

Wireless Access Point.

A wireless router is basically a router with a WAP built in, in the
same way that a modem\router is a router with a modem built in.

I've got a WAP to add the wireless bit onto my existing wired network.

However, when we get broadband installed in the next couple of weeks here,
its going to be wireless/satellite. Does that mean I could connect (in the
garden say) directly without using the router? (and hence the card could be
any old card)

No, you still need to go through the router, unless you can get a
PCMCIA satellite dish........
