I wonder if someone could give me a little advice please. I am already on
the adsl 512k service with BTBROADBAND, no complaints, good isp etc,
specially customer service.

The thing is now, I want to upgrade to a 1 or 2mb line, so I am looking
around all the ISP's comparing prices and comments about them. Some personal
experiences from here would be appreciated.

Also, i have the flat round green modem the same one I have had for 2 years
now, I know it can handle up to 8mbit lines, checked the manual for that, I
was just wondering if there was anyone who is using that modem for faster
lines and if they have had any problems with it.

All feedback is appreciated, thank you.

Have a look at the forums at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

fwiw BT Broadband will be (if they haven't already) launching a 1MB product,
while I am on Bulldog who currently do 2MB lines (offpeak) for £29.99.

Yes, the Alactel modem will work fine - I have it attached here (sometimes!)
to a 2MB line..

One thing to be aware of, if you have "engineer installed" ADSL you cannot
directly upgrade to Home1000 (or whatever the other folks call it) without
first unsubscribing then re-subscribing (£35) and regrading (£35), yes
that's two charges of £35 +VAT.
AFAIK if you have "wires only" Home500 then you can regrade to Home1000, or
migrate this to another ISP for £35+VAT....clear as mud...

True though the OP was with BT Broadband who I believe never offered the
"engineer install" option so it doesn't apply to him.

Is correct, I started off with AOL (spit spit lol.)
Then when I moved to present house, I went with BTBROADBAND, so had to get
new microfilters, so yes, is own install in that sense of things, the ISP I
was talking about with the prices is
http://www.giomail.co.uk/products/broadband-home.aspx

It has a £60 activation fee then the 30 or 40 a month, which I dont suppose
is too bad, but I would like to keep my options open and not run into this
and regret it afterwards

For the first year (before the cost could increase). I might give
them a go (but only if I miss the deadline for UKfsn's 27.50/month
with free setup... 24x7 1 Mbps should be fine :-) Peter M.
