I have had a Linksys WUSB11 v2.5 wireless network adapter for almost
two years. The device driver that was available when I purchased it
had not passed WHQL (certification by Microsoft that indicates the
thing behaves well).
Although the driver worked fairly well, it did not function properly
when WinXP is restored from "Stand By" mode. I finally became annoyed
enough to try to upgrade to the latest driver. Unfortunately when I
tried to install the newer driver the installation failed with an
error message that started with, "The name is already in use as a
service...".
I contacted Linksys support and they walked me through some useless
exercise for about 20 minutes. Then with great confidence the
technician declared, "It's a conflict with the interrupts. Contact
your computer manufacturer and they'll help you resolve the issue.".
I contacted my computer manufacturer and they referred me to a generic
troubleshooting guide for USB devices. Unfortunately it did not help.
As a last attempt before finally giving up I searched the registry for
the name of the device driver file (lswlusb.sys). I found two entries
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSetxxx\Services. I deleted both
of them, restarted Windows, plugged the WUSB11 device back in, and it
worked.
