BT Broadband on a Linksys WAG325N router, migration from ADSL MAX to
ADSL2+

I got an email from the Retail Migration Team on the 9th to say that our
exchange/network upgrade would be done on the 12th. Today, the 13th,
I've got another email from the Retail Migration Team to say that the
work was completed yesterday as planned and now my broadband speed and
connection should be faster than before, but unfortunately it isn't.

I know that the system can take up to ten days to settle down and become
stable but - and I may well be wrong here - I thought the router sync
speed should increase straight away and then the IP Profile increases
over the 10-day period.

I've rebooted the router a couple of times this morning but it is still
syncing at 8128/448 as it always has done. I also did a speedtest, the
results of which are:

Download speed achieved during the test was - 6578 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2000-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

So, am I just being impatient? Should I wait the 10 days before
contacting them? Or am I right in thinking that my sync speed should
have increased straight away and so I should contact them now because
something's not right?

I should perhaps also say that the router has different settings for the
DSL Modulation. It is currently set at MultiMode, which I think means
that it chooses the right setting itself automatically, but I could also
choose from T1.143, G.DMT, G.LITE, ADSL2, ADSL2+ (which I tried but it
doesn't connect) ADSL2 L, ADSL2+ L, ADSL2 M and finally ADSL2+ M.

TIA

No, you're not impatient. I'd contact them now. At the very least your
sync rate should have changed.

It could be that your router isn't quite as ADSL2+ as you think and
can't cope stably with ADSL2+ as happened to me.

Is there a way on the Linksys to see what flavour of modulation it
is currently using ? I know I can find this info on my Netgear.

But if the router/modem won't connect when you manually select ADSL2+
then something isn't right. Either the exchange kit hasn't been
upgraded to ADSL2+, or the Linksys isn't able to select it.

+1.

That is the clearest summary you can probably make.

Yes there is Andrew. Here's what it's currently showing:

--- DSL Information ---
DSL Driver Version: AnnexA version - A2pB022g.d20e
DSL VPI/VCI: 0/38
DSL Status: ShowtimeRetrain Reason: 1
DSL Mode: G.DMT
DSL Channel: INTR
DSL Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
DSL Downstream Rate: 8128 Kbps

Down up
DSL Noise Margin: 9.1 dB 25.0 dB
DSL Attenuation: 37.0 dB 23.0 dB
DSL Transmit Power: 19.8 dBm 12.3 dBm

and here's what I see when ADSL2+ (rather than MultiMode) is selected:

--- DSL Information ---
DSL Driver Version: AnnexA version - A2pB022g.d20e
DSL VPI/VCI: 0/38
DSL Status: G.994 TrainingRetrain Reason: 1
DSL Mode:
DSL Channel:
DSL Upstream Rate:
DSL Downstream Rate:

Down up
DSL Noise Margin: dB dB
DSL Attenuation: dB dB
DSL Transmit Power: dBm dBm

Hmm, it seems that Gravity newsreader has chopped more of your text than
I wanted it to but never mind - the info you need is there. Got to go
out now for a couple of hours so I'll get back to the group later.
Thanks for your help.

OK. This shows that in MultiMode the router/modem is sync'd with ADSL1,
and that a manual attempt to sync with ADSL2+ fails. Which is essentially
what we already knew, except now we've got proof.
Sounds like it's time to challenge your ISP regarding the supposed
upgrade at your exchange.

Now there's the rub. After some digging it appears weasel words are
afoot. Here's part of the text from an email I received this morning
from the Retail Migration Team:

************************************************** *
Good news. We?ve upgraded our network in your area
Remember we let you know we were rolling out our faster broadband? We?ve
now done it in your area. We always offer the fastest speed your line
can take and now your broadband speed and connection should be faster
and more stable than before.
************************************************** **

Now, that sounds to me like the upgrade should take place automatically,
without us doing anything. However, I emailed the help desk to say that
my router sync speed hadn't changed and this is the reply I got:

************************************************** *****
The Retail Migration Team email is only to advise that your telephone
line has been connected to new exchange equipment. This means that the
"up to 20Mbps" speeds are available on the 21CN network but not
available until you upgrade through renewing your contact.
************************************************** *********

So it seems I may have to renew my contract to get access to ADSL2+
speeds. However, also contained within the email from the Retail
Migration Team is the news that our exchange - and more specifically my
cabinet - is due to go live with FTTC on 30th September, so I think I
may just hang on and go for Infinity instead now that I know about this
contract renewal lark.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Ys. I vaguely remember that when talking to IDnet, you can in fact get
ADSL or ADSL 2+ deals. which implies the equipment is ISP configurable
in some way.

They dont IIRC differ in price tho.

If I remember correctly, a friend who is with Zen had the option of
staying with ADSL or changing to ADSL2+, no new contract.

The reason for the option is that where people are a long distance
from the exchange, a change to ADSL2+ can result in lower speed, as he
was at the end of the line, he opted to stay as he was, but can change
at any time.

BT have now put FTTC closer, so he now has that option, but as he is
not a heavy user, I think he is happy with what he has got.
