Update firmware on 2nd MN700 (AP mode)

I have two MN-700's One serves as the DHCP server connected to the
cable modem and provides wireless to about 2/3 of my house. In order
to have wireless at the far end of my house, I connected a 2nd MN700,
configured for Access Point mode, via CAT5. This effectively provides
coverage over my entire house and most of my yard.

I have two questions:

1. Should I update the firmware on the MN-700 AP, if yes, will I need
to plug it into a computer directly?

2. I currently have different SSIDs on the two devices. When they
both had the same SSID, one of my older computers had trouble locking
onto a signal. Is this normal? Should I set the SSIDs the same and
replace the aging dLink 802.11b PCcard with a b/g card, or is it
proper to set different SSIDs for the same network?

Thanks,

Mike
