plus £25 if the modem they provide isn't capable of speeds up to 16Mb.

An admission that their network cannot cope.
'up to' becomin the same as ADSL lately, even though it's cable.

They own the modems, and they expect customers to pay them £25 for a
modem that is fit for the purpose.

If the modem is "not fit for purpose" as it requires replacing when going to
higher speeds, then this replacement should be free due to you not actually
owning the equipment.

I would strongly suggest people complain to OFCOM, saying that VM are trying
to extort money out of customers by introducing a change to replace their
own equipment.

Exactly...
They were issuin free replacements for users on the old modems upgradin
to 10Mb before now, and now they know that all them £25's are gonna make
£1,000's.

Even if they said it was for sending an engineer around to physically
replace the modem.
That's their problem, they're the ones who are offerin the service, they
still offer a free tech visit if the problem is their end and not the
customers.

I would strongly suggest that people just tell em where to stick their
equipment )

I really thought the leopard may have changed it's spots with the
re-branding to VM, however looks like the same old poor value with juts a
new gloss on it.

Wait... So they provide a modem for a 16mb service but you have to pay extra
if that modem they provide does not work at that speed?
Surely they should be providing an item fit for the purpose of the service?

I assume this applies to current customers who have an older modem?

That's all the 'Virgin Media' name change was for.
To hide the name NTL.

New customers wud presumably get a modem that is 'fit for the purpose'
issued.
Only 'existing' customers with an incompatible modem wud be charged £25
to provide a modem that is compatible.

Don't be silly..
Its not an upgrade so the customer decides if they want this new service.

It is an enforced upgrade - The £35 Virgin Media 10Mbps service is being
replaced by a 20Mbps service costing £37. No choice to opt out has been
offered...

It may only be £2/month but why should you have to pay it if the kit
that is suplied by the ISP is not fuly compatible with the service now
provided?

They've changed their mind now.
Probly cuz they know that they're rippin people off.

They're now sayin that they'll send you the modem and you can fit it
yourself.

Where before you couldn't install a modem yourself for any reason, and
had to have an engineer sent out.

Anyway...
They've changed their mind about rippin customers off, that's all that
matters.
